Project Description

‘New Year, New Dust Storm’, Warren NSW

Tell us more about yourself

I am Hayley an amateur photographer and drone flyer from Gilgandra, Central West NSW. In my spare time I take photos and fly around any chance I get. Most images I post on my Instagram account, @Hayley.alt, but I am purely doing it for the fun of it.

What is the background to the shot?

This shot was taken on News Years Eve out on the cotton farm in Warren. Everyone was on their phones checking the weather, hoping for some much needed rain. I could see a storm brewing up out the back and thought ‘that would make a cool storm cloud photo.’ I sent the drone up and that dust cloud was what was headed straight for us. We had no idea!

Within 10mins of that shot we were drenched in fine red dust which lasted about 30mins. The photo was just pure luck that I went up for a look and what I saw was nothing to what we were expecting.

What drone did you use to capture the shot?

My drone of choice is Mavic 2 Zoom.

Why do you take drone photography?

I like drone photography because it’s fun and has an element of surprise!! You can go places a regular camera can’t and you can see the world from a completely different angle. Every image I take I usually find something I wasn’t expecting to see.
