October 23, 2019

BIRDI, Pexels & Canva have teamed up to launch a global drone video contest, ‘Explore the World from Above’, with the aim of empowering creatives and highlighting the work of talented drone users around the world. Until November 18th, drone users have a chance to win USD $500 each week as well as a 1 year subscription to Canva Pro and entry into the grand prize of USD $1,000.

Behind every video is a talented drone user and a beautiful story. During the drone video contest we will give you the story behind each week’s winning drone user and video.

Meet Sandrine Hecq the talent behind the week 1 winning video 'Africa by Drone'. South African born drone enthusiast Sandrine Hecq has a passion for capturing the world from a different perspective. She travels the world capturing travel videos, photographs and vlogs in order to give people another view of the world they live in.

Sandrine’s career in photography and videography started out as a side passion with using GoPro 4. Realising the power of an aerial perspective she quickly acquired a DJI Mavic 2 Pro and the rest is history!

“I discovered drones existed and it took over my life after realising I could share an aerial perspective with the world.” Week 1’s winning video ‘Africa by Drone’ was inspired by Sandrine’s childhood in South Africa. Wanting to share with the world the country’s hidden beauty she planned a 3 day trip filming trip. “I was so lucky to find all the animals in the area during my short trip. I topped it off with filming flamingos which has been a long time dream of mine.”

Tips for Drone Photographers/Videographers

When asked to share her tips for other drone photographers/videographers and here’s what Sandrine said;“My biggest tip would be to never compare yourself. This held my potential back for a long time. Some more awesome tips would be to use ND & Polariser Filters, shoot at golden hours (Sunset & Sunrise) I also shoot in DLOG so that I can colour-grade the footage better.”
