BIRDI was invited, as part of industry consultation, to attend a Digital Earth Australia (DEA) industry workshop. Sebastian Robertson, BIRDI CEO, and Jason Williams, BIRDI CTO, went along to the industry workshop put on by Geoscience Australia and FrontierSI (formerly the CRC for Spatial Information).
The workshop is part of a national consultation by DEA with industry on how best to make government owned satellite data available to Australian businesses, for free, with no strings attached. As part of an industry who uses satellite imagery it was valuable to be a part of the consult process.
The Australian government wants industry to develop and commercialise products and services off the back of data that was previously unavailable. The number of people in the room that couldn’t believe this was a no strings attached initiative. Government is often considered a beige box, generally slow and bland. It’s exciting to see initiatives born from technology aimed at helping business coming from government.
We are excited to be using this data in the BIRDI platform.
