Congratulations to the NSW Government team whose 3D Theatre of Operations for Splendour in the Grass project won the People & Communities category at the Asia-Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards (NSW). The BIRDI platform was honoured to have played a part in the Splendour in the Grass project through facilitating the capture, delivery and storage of aerial imagery by certified local drone pilots.
Splendour in the Grass is an annual Australian 3 day music festival. The festival attracts over 35,000 music lovers each year to the North Byron Parklands area. The NSW Government Emergency Information Coordination (EIC) Unit supports the NSW Government in delivering safe, well managed events to the people of NSW.
Aligning with NSW Government Smart State NSW program of work, the EIC Unit sought to transform the way NSW approaches the planning and preparation of event management across the State
In order to align with the Smart State NSW program of work, the NSW Government EIC Unit sought to transform the way NSW approaches the planning and preparation of event management across the State. Until now the process has been manual with hand annotated printed maps being used. This has meant that there is no electronic record of past events for future event planning.
To capture aerial imagery of the Splendour in the Grass event precinct in order to create a 3D model. Aerial imagery must be captured by certified drone pilots with strict compliance to aviation regulations and adherence to the capture requirements set out by the NSW Government. The EIC Unit engaged the BIRDI platform to facilitate and deliver the capture of aerial imagery by local drone pilots.
The BIRDI platform facilitated the capture of aerial imagery by local certified drone pilots and delivered the images within hours of capture to the appropriate NSW Government Department for processing. The appropriate NSW Government Departments were able to easily access and process the images to create a 3D model of the event precinct for the EIC Unit. The model was used by the EIC Unit and Event Managers to review the precinct layout and will be used to assist in planning future events. The BIRDI platform ensured full compliance with aviation regulations, coordinated data storage and centralised management, as well as clear operational procedures for internal employees and outsourced providers.
