From 2 Weeks to 2 Days: How the BIRDI Platform Transformed our Asset Inspection Process

June 11, 2018

Our client's problem:

Maritime leasing inspections for wharfs and jetties currently occur annually through manual assessment via boat and hand held camera. It is resource intensive, costly and inefficient. The maritime leasing inspection process can take many months to complete and it is difficult to pull data insights from year-on-year reports.

BIRDI's Solution

BIRDI was engaged to performed a trial across 50 sites, inspecting wharfs and jetties in Sydney Harbour, to demonstrate the capability of integrating drone technology in order to cut costs, improve efficiency and provide smart data insights. The BIRDI platform matched local pilots to perform each of the inspections. Within hours of capture, the data was on the BIRDI platform and customised reports were generated for each site. The BIRDI platform was able to assist in:

  1. Provision of qualified drone pilots - BIRDI has the largest directory of drone pilots with more than 1,400 across Australia.
  2. Matched local drone pilots within hours of the request - saving time and money as drone pilots didn't need to be flown in to capture footage.
  3. Aerial imagery processed on the BIRDI platform - the BIRDI platform integrates with a variety of third party software providers.

In two days the BIRDI platform performed what would normally take two weeks. The BIRDI platform enabled deep data analysis, provided centralised data storage and management, and generated reports that identified sites which potentially breach their engineering specifications. The BIRDI platform enables year on year comparisons, a brand new feature for RMS.
