CASA Drone Registration Update

August 7, 2019

On July 31st CASA announced the updated dates for their Remotely Piloted Aircraft and Model Aircraft - Registration and Accreditation Regulations. This registration applies to all drone operators, both recreational and commercial.

The scheme, due to start this month, will roll out in phases later this year, with sub-2KG commercial operators to be followed by recreational operators using a 250+ gram drone.

Here is what you need to know:

New rules come in effect from late 2019 that will require drones to be registered with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.Registration will occur over two phases:

  • commercial drones from November 2019
  • recreational drones from March 2020.

The rules also require all drone flyers to either have a remote pilot licence (RePL) or have completed a short online safety quiz.

The registration and accreditation requirements apply (with certain exceptions) to:

  • drones more than 250 grams operated recreationally
  • all drones operated commercially regardless of weight.

We are in continual communication with CASA and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) regarding the integration and automation of registration through the BIRDI platform. We will keep you updated on this progress.
